Plug by plug

Vietnam uses 3 plug types. Check the plug on each charger you pack.

The adapter for your Type C plugs

Your Type A and B plugs go straight into the wall. For the rest you need something with Type B and A prongs on the wall side.

Type B prongs on the adapterPack this

Type B plug adapter

Type B prongs on the wall side and a socket for your plugs on the front.

Its Type B prongs fit outlets in the United States, and your Type C plugs slot into the front.

Look for

  • Takes your plugs on the front
  • Earthed, if your chargers have an earth pin
  • Compact enough for recessed sockets

Other good options

Type A prongs on the adapter

Type A plug adapter

Type A prongs on the wall side and a socket for your plugs on the front.

Look for

  • Takes your plugs on the front
  • Only for plugs without an earth pin
  • Compact enough for recessed sockets

Universal travel adapter

Slide-out prongs for most of the world, handy if this isn't your only trip.

Look for

  • USB-C ports for charging without a brick
  • A fuse
  • Fits the countries you visit most

Check your device labels

Home is 220V, the United States is 120V. Phone and laptop chargers marked "100-240V" work anywhere. Single-voltage gear like hair dryers and straighteners needs a converter, or a dual-voltage travel version.

Vietnam
220V50Hz
United States
120V60Hz

Voltage converter

Only for single-voltage gear like some hair tools. Phone and laptop chargers don't need one.

Only for single-voltage gear. Skip it if everything you pack says 100-240V.

Look for

  • Rated above your device's wattage
  • Steps the voltage the right way
  • Thermal cut-off

Your packing list for the United States

Everything to sort before you fly from Vietnam.

  1. A plug adapter for Type B and A outlets, one per device you charge at the same time.
  2. Check the label on each charger and appliance for "100-240V". Anything rated for 220V only needs a converter or a dual-voltage replacement in the United States (120V).
  3. The United States runs at 60Hz. Chargers don't mind; motors and mains-timed clocks may run differently.
  4. A power bank in your carry-on, not your checked bag. Under 100Wh needs no airline approval.
  5. One multi-port USB-C charger, so a single outlet charges everything.

Worth packing on any trip

Small things that make long travel days easier, whichever outlet you end up next to.

Power bank

Keeps your phone going on travel days. Carry it on; airlines ban power banks from checked bags.

Look for

  • Under 100Wh (about 27,000mAh)
  • USB-C in and out
  • Watt-hours (Wh) printed on the case

Multi-port USB-C charger

One dual-voltage charger for phone, laptop and watch, so you need one adapter.

Look for

  • 100-240V input
  • Enough watts for your laptop
  • Two or more USB-C ports

Long USB-C cable

Hotel outlets are rarely next to the bed. Two metres reaches.

Look for

  • 2m long
  • Rated for your charger's watts
  • Braided
